16 Oct 08 A Bizzare spectacle - Debt Clock runs out of digits!

It is very well known that US debt to the World bank has crossed $10 trillion, thanks to the brilliant administration of George Walker Bush and his congress. The primary reason being the money spent by taxpayers to the troops in Iraq. Apart from that, the stock market crash has costed heavily too. But the total debt that the US govt has will be displayed in a Debt clock here

As you can see in the image, there are no digits to display the debt as $10,000,000,000,000. However, the clock’s inventor Seymour durst plans on replacing the clock with a lengthier version.

15 Oct 08 Stock market in turmoil!

Merriam - Webster’s dictionary states the term

Turmoil - a state or condition of extreme confusion, agitation, or commotion.

But I guess one can safely edit the term in the dictionary as

Turmoil - International Stock market

I don’t know what started this extreme confusion, but since the battle between Senators Obama and McCain started, the stock market took a downward spiral. Adding insult to the injury is the bailout plan. According to me it is a stupid concept put forth by the Congress government of USA. Bush has lost it completely.

Here is an excerpt from NYTimes.COM

Q. The bailout program being negotiated by the Bush administration and Congressional leaders calls for the government to spend up to $700 billion to buy distressed mortgages. How did the politicians come up with that number, and could it go higher?

A. The recovery package cannot go higher than $700 billion without additional legislation. As for that figure, it lies between the optimistic estimate of $500 billion and the pessimistic guess of $1 trillion about the cost of fixing the financial mess. But the $700 billion is in addition to an $85 billion agreement on a bailout of the insurance giant American International Group, plus $29 billion in support that the government pledged in the marriage of Bear Stearns and JPMorgan Chase. On top of all that, the Congressional Budget Office says the federal bailout of the mortgage finance companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac could cost $25 billion.

Q. Who, really, is going to come up with the $700 billion?

A. American taxpayers will come up with the money, although if you are bullish on America in the long run, there is reason to hope that the tab will be less than $700 billion. After the Treasury buys up those troubled mortgages, it will try to resell them to investors. The Treasury’s involvement in the crisis and the speed with which Congress is responding could generate long-range optimism and raise the value of those mortgages, although it is impossible to say by how much.

So it would not be correct to think of the federal government as simply writing a check for $700 billion. It is just committing itself to spend that much, if necessary. But the bottom line is, yes, this bailout could cost American taxpayers a lot of money.

Q. So is it fair to say that Americans who are neither rich nor reckless are being asked to rescue people who are? What is in this package for responsible homeowners of modest means who might be forced out of their homes, perhaps for reasons beyond their control?

A. Yes, you could argue that people who cannot tell soybean futures from puts, calls and options are being asked to clean up the costly mess left by Wall Street. To make the bailout palatable to the public, it is being described as far better than inaction, which administration officials and members of Congress say could imperil the retirement savings and other investments of Americans who are anything but rich.

The last two lines clearly says the dialogue uttered by Rajini in Sivaji. “Rich getting richer and the Poor getting poorer”.

14 Oct 08 Yahoo! Model exams over!

Finally, a breathing space from today onwards. The model exams are over. Last exam being Information security for one set of guys and Cryptography for a measly few people. Now, mind you, it isn’t the exam that is nerve wrecking, but writing them for 3 hours is. After 6 long semesters, writing exam for 3 full hours to get a score above 50 or 60 is becoming a pain in the neck.

A better system of assesing a candidate is of the essence now. I always believe, ‘A good science student knows how to conserve paper’. But it isn’t the case with the Anna University. The more you write, the better your chances are scoring good marks. That is why they came up with the concept ‘16 marks’. Ideally, detailed questions should be 10 marks only (like in our schooling), wherein the candidate can clearly express the ideas in a precise and concise manner.

If I ever become the Vice chancellor of Anna university (I don’t intend on even planning to become one), I will surely try to make amends and restore the lost life of poor bamboo trees.

13 Oct 08 Finally! OOAD Record over!

Three cheers!! CASE Tools lab record done! Its 11.20 PM now, I have finished marking the dates in this 260+ page record. It took the combined efforts of Vivek, myself and few others to complete the record work. We managed to take printout of 8 experiments (205 pages!) yesterday and it took a long time to align and complete the remaining two, especially when there wasn’t any cooperation. Many in our class didn’t have the common sense of getting Rational Rose from the college and installing it so that the record work can be done with.

Once done with the alignments and stuff, I went to the shop where bulk printout is offered at Re.1. Though the toner quality wasn’t that good, it wasn’t that bad either. Had to adjust with whatever came on the paper. Once set and ready, the page count came to nearly 260. Spiral binding costed about Rs.35 for the bigger and bulkier record. I hope the external, whoever is coming, is impressed with our hardwork.

10 Oct 08 DSP Model exam - Had good time

Ever heard of Oxymoron? The title above is one. Well, eventhough it may be unbelievable to a few (many) of you, DSP exam today was great fun. We came to know the questions today morning 9.30 and started working on the problems. I was unsure whether the method I used to solve them and answers I got are correct and without knowing the validity, I repeated the same in the model exam paper. Exam got over by 3.15 and Gomsan started distributing ‘Pori potlams’. I asked gopal, who sat in front of me, ‘Machi, inniki DSPla evalo da therum?’. He replied promptly with the song from Vasool Raja MBBS

‘Pathu kulla number onnu sollu,
en mark enna varumnu solren.
5 enbathu en first monthly mark.
7 enbathu en second monthly mark’

I couldn’t control my laughter and the remaining time period flew by.

07 Oct 08 No Mercy - Kicks A$$!

Recently I saw WWE Pay-per-view show ‘No Mercy’. Man, it was unbelieveable! The matches lined up were

1. ECW Championship
Matt Hardy (ECW Champion) vs Mark Henry - Matt hardy delivers TOF and retains title
2. Rey Mysterio vs Kane
If Rey loses, he should unmask. Kane gets disqualified for using a Steel chair
3. #1 Contenders Match
Batista vs JBL - Batista powerbombs his way to the World Heavyweight championship match
4. Women’s championship
Beth Phoenix(Champion) vs Candice Michelle - Phoenix’s glam slam makes sure she retains her title
5. Big Show vs Undertaker
Dirty and personal. Big show’s Big Fist puts an end to taker’s misery
6. WWE Championship Match
‘The Game’ Triple H vs ‘The Enigma’ Jeff Hardy. Game counters Hardy’s swanton into a pin and retains title
7. World Heavyweight Championship - Ladder Match
HBK Shawn Michaels vs Y2J Chris Jericho -Jericho was at the right end of the ladder at the right time to defeat the Show stopper.

Like it or not, we can observe that champions came in and walked out as retaining the title. The ladder match was brutal and HBK did what he wanted to do. Permanently disfigure Jericho’s face. There is a poll in WWE website for voting your favorite match. Since the match between Triple H and Jeff Hardy was too good, I voted for it.

06 Oct 08 Results of NASSCOM exam

Ah, the title did catch your eye, didn’t it? Well, it sure is incomplete though. The complete sentence is ‘Results of NASSCOM exam in another 3 weeks’. What the ____?? Why do they need three weeks to release the results which appeared in the monitor (almost immediately) once the exam got over?

The placement office didn’t appear too enthusiastic about it when we asked them the same. I can understand you feeling ‘avanga enniku than surusurupa irunthurukkanga?’. Oh its true… its true…

06 Oct 08 Precedented delay - Round 1 - L cube

I was feeling excited to attend Round 1 of the ON campus recruitment conducted by L cube Innovative solutions. But it was a big let down (not that I really care) as the exam started by 4.30 (when I was travelling towards home). Just what I expected when I heard that the exam will be conducted afternoon.

The thing is, Internet programming model exam was conducted today morning as they thought students would be writing the Round 1 during noon. That didn’t happen and I was happy to have written the exam morning itself, when I had the mood to write it.

06 Oct 08 Sudden Change in STB

For a couple of days, my STB (Set Top Box) was not functioning properly. I didn’t know what the problem was and so I went to see my cable operator. Surprise was, the contract the cable operators signed up with SCV was over and they have now subscribed with Hathway. All the more advantageous to me, as I get to enjoy more channels at Rs.66 only where as I paid Rs.100 to get to enjoy a select few channels. Though the reception is quite bad I don’t care much. The programmes I watch on TV are

1. Sun Music (When I eat)
2. WWE Raw, Smackdown (If downloads aren’t available)
3. Movies in HBO, Star Movies (When I’m really really free)
4. Friends and Seinfeld (When I’m free)

Also, after changing to Hathway, RAW programme is aired in advance. Previously, If today is 6th October, they used to air the show which took place on 22nd September. But now, they air the show which took place on 29th september. So this sunday, its WWE No Mercy on Ten Sports.. Bah, who cares, I always watch WWE by downloading.
